The World of Karto
The World of Karto is an interactive experience exploring the intersection of storytelling and cartography through design. Its goal was to present one method of showcasing a fictional story solely through a 3D map generated using spoofed GIS data. It also featured a companion exhibition display as part of the ARTIFACT Exhibition.
In my final year of education at The University of Minnesota, I had to research a design topic I found interesting and create a mini-thesis on that topic. I was really interested in learning more about storytelling and how maps have been used to tell stories. From Winnie the Pooh to Lord of the Rings, I came to learn that maps have a very deep role in many novels and stories. For our final exhibition we had to take our research and implement it in a real-life display.
To create Karto, I had to learn several different softwares and development languages. From Blender for the 3D modeling, to creating a local development environment for NPM and ES6 Modules, a lot of my time was spent learning each medium. The final product showcases the capabilities of digital maps and 3D when brought together, all while looking like a video game. The project was displayed in May 2022 during the ARTIFACT Exhibition.
